According to the legends, the city of Paphos is the birthplace of the Greek Goddess of Love, Aphrodite. Paphos was founded by King Cinyras, son of goddess Aphrodite around 1400 BC. The port of Paphos was built by Nicocles, the last king of Paphos, at the time of Alexander the Great.
Paphos was the capital of Cyprus as well as the capital of much larger regions up until the middle ages when other cities became much larger and more important both financially and religiously. Paphos continued to be ignored until late into the 20th century when the rest of the island was growing steadily and becoming a major tourist destination.
Today Paphos is a popular sea resort with a population more than f the city.
